Summer Camps

Each year over 150 students spend three to five days surrounded by Virgin Islands National Park at Eco-Camps, Science Camp and Ranger-in-Training Camp.

Working in partnership with Clean Islands International and Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS), the Friends has been proud to offer VI children the golden opportunity to attend Eco-Camps for over 20 years, so that they may have fun in the outdoors, while continuing to build their science skills over the summer months.

These summer learning opportunities provide youth with hands-on science instruction led by academic and professional scientists from around the globe, and instill the value of our VI National Park as a living classroom. The value of such learning opportunities is known to help prepare students for college and career-readiness, as well as to improve core science and math skills. Supporting Eco-Camps also helps the Friends to meet its mission of cultivating the next generation of conservationists.

Students ranging from age 7 to 16 attend one of the three camp programs – Eco-Camp, Science Camp, or Ranger-in-Training Camp. Students are recruited from public, private, and homeschool environments on St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix by the Friends organization, UVI/VI EPSCoR, VIERS, Virgin Islands National Park, and their school leaders through a variety of outreach programs and efforts throughout the school year.

Trained counselors and educators strongly emphasize the preservation of the natural and cultural resources that are found in the Virgin Islands in their instruction. In addition to the environmental education curriculum, youth enjoy hiking, swimming, snorkeling, eco-art and fun environmental learning activities.
