VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
Activities Guide
Intrigue visitors with the wonders of St. John by leading regularly
scheduled or special request programs (training will be provided).
Make presentations on the natural resources and/or cultural history
for the following: Annaberg Living History Demonstrations, Reef Bay
Hike, Snorkel Trip at Trunk Bay, Seashore Walk, Campground Evening
Program, Special Events.
Annaberg Docent Program
Docents answer questions from tourists about the history of Annaberg
and give tours as needed. Volunteers who can make a commitment to help
out once a week throughout the season will be trained to help preserve
our history.
Friends' Retail Store
Volunteer in the Friends' Store assisting customers,
promoting Friends' membership and activities.
Archaeology Data Recording
Assist Park archaeologist Ken Wild and interns in the lab at the
Biosphere recording information on artifacts excavated from Cinnamon
Bay.
Adopt-A-Beach/Bay/Trail
Help local businesses/organizations/school groups who adopt beaches
and/or trails to keep these beautiful places clean of trash and
debris.
Thursday and Saturday
Volunteers
Volunteer maintenance group met every Thursday and Saturday morning,
December 1, 2007 through April 26, 2008, to help maintain Park trails and ruins,
remove debris from beaches and coastlines, and assist with general
maintenance projects such as painting. Work projects will vary weekly,
and volunteers of all skill levels were welcome.
Historic Structures - Vegetation Removal
Uncover unknown historic structures from the bush while learning about
the fascinating history of St. John.
Exotic Vegetation Control
Help protect native species and their habitats by assisting interns
with removing invasive plants, monitoring for recolonization, planting
natives and monitoring their success.
Front Desk Assistant
Welcome guests to the National Park Visitor Center by answering
questions about St. John’s culture and natural history, selling books
and gifts, and answering phones.
Office Assistant
Three fulltime staff aren’t enough to get all this work done! Assist
with a variety of different projects in the Friends office at Mongoose
Junction, Cruz Bay.
Trail Maintenance -- Experience the
terrain, enjoy the views and help keep St. John’s trails in good
hiking condition.
Painting – Experienced painters are
needed to help give government buildings and guard rails a new splash
of color.
Carpentry – Looking for handy-men who
want to help Park employees construct a new building at the Park’s
maintenance department.
