EDUCATION

The dig at Cinnamon Bay is open to all local area school classes as both an in class and field class experience. The hope is that by bringing the dig into the classroom as well as offering a day to dig the students of the Virgin Islands will develop a more connected relationship with the cultural heritage of the islands and the park. Over 12 local schools have taken advantage of this opportunity sending about 25 different classes to the dig. Numbers of children who have become archaeologists for a day total more than 700 hundred.

The children first learn about the dig in the classroom with a brief introduction, which includes hands on learning about archaeology through a show-and-tell forum and a question and answer session. Some groups have had the opportunity to make clay replicas of the zemis found at the site. This makes the project indeed, for the people, by the people.
